China

Although the treatment of women has changed dramatically in China since the 1950s when foot binding was still a common practice, women still occupy secondary positions in China today.   Over 80% of all government positions are open only to men.  Women are still being discriminated against in hiring.   There is also evidence that women are still being bought and sold as wives in China.
     - Women's suffrage:
1921 in Hunan Province; full political rights stipulated nationally for women in 1949 by the "Common Program" (prelude to the Constitution)

    - Equal Rights:
the 1952 Constitution stipulated women's equality in spheres of political, economic, cultural, social, and family life as does the 1982 Constitution
      (Article 48).
